Commercial Spaces

Bring healthier materials and thoughtful construction into your commercial space.

The spaces where people work, gather, shop, receive care, and spend time can influence how they feel and experience a business.

We work with businesses, property owners, architects, interior designers, and other design professionals on commercial renovations, tenant improvements, specialty projects, and select small-scale new construction.

Projects may incorporate healthier materials and finishes, natural building materials, biophilic design principles, thoughtful lighting, or distinctive architectural elements. The approach depends on the space, the business, and what makes sense for the project.

From a focused renovation to a more specialized build-out, we bring construction knowledge to the process—helping coordinate materials, trades, details, and installation while keeping the goals of the project in view.

A Healthier Commercial Environment

The materials and systems within a commercial space matter—not only for how the space looks, but for the people who spend time there.

For businesses focused on health and wellness, hospitality, retail, education, or other people-centered environments, there may be particular value in considering what occupants are exposed to throughout the day.

Depending on the project, we may help incorporate:

  • Lower-emitting paints, coatings, adhesives, and sealants

  • Natural plaster and mineral-based finishes

  • Natural wood and other bio-based materials

  • Healthier cabinetry and built-ins

  • Flooring selected with indoor air quality and durability in mind

  • Material choices that reduce unnecessary sources of chemical exposure

These decisions can be considered alongside the practical requirements of commercial construction, including durability, maintenance, cleaning, traffic, moisture, and the intended use of the space.

Designing For The Human Experience

A healthier commercial space isn't only about the materials used to build it.

Biophilic design—the intentional incorporation of natural elements, patterns, materials, light, and connections to nature—can influence how a space feels and how people experience it.

Depending on the project, that might mean incorporating natural wood, stone, plants, natural textures, views to the outdoors, or materials that create a stronger connection to the surrounding environment.

Lighting is another important part of that experience.

Where appropriate, we can consider opportunities to improve both natural and artificial lighting, including:

  • Increasing natural light through window or skylight placement

  • Using mirrors strategically to reflect and distribute available daylight

  • Incorporating warmer, more comfortable lighting in spaces where appropriate

  • Reducing unnecessary exposure to harsh or overly cool lighting

  • Considering alternatives to LED lighting where the project and application warrant it

  • Adding task lighting where focused illumination is needed

Not every space needs every strategy. The goal is to consider the whole environment and identify improvements that genuinely support the people who use it.

Natural materials can also give a commercial space a sense of place and identity.

We can help incorporate materials and details such as clay plaster, lime plaster, natural wood, stone, earthen materials, and other bio-based materials where they are appropriate to the project.

These materials can be used throughout a space or concentrated in particular architectural elements.

Examples might include:

  • Reception desks and service counters

  • Display cabinets and built-ins

  • Feature walls

  • Custom woodwork

  • Rammed-earth elements

  • Plaster walls and ceilings

  • Natural-material partitions and other interior features

For some businesses, these details are an important part of expressing their identity. For others, they may simply be an opportunity to introduce warmth, texture, and natural materials into an otherwise conventional space.

Natural Materials + Distinctive Architectural Elements

Projects With Character

Commercial work can take many forms, and we're particularly interested in projects where the space itself matters to the business.

Working With Your Design Team

Many commercial projects begin with an architect, interior designer, or other design professional. We are happy to join an existing team and bring construction knowledge into the process early.

If you are still assembling your project team, we can also help identify architects, designers, and specialty professionals whose experience is appropriate to the goals of the project.

This can be particularly important when a project incorporates natural building systems or specialized materials. Plaster, rammed earth, earthen construction, and other natural-material approaches can require different detailing, substrates, sequencing, sourcing, and installation methods than conventional construction.

Early communication between the design and construction teams helps ensure that the intended materials and details can be successfully built.

Our role can range from managing the construction of a defined scope to serving as the general contractor for a larger renovation or build-out, depending on the project.

A Thoughtful Commercial Build

Every commercial project has its own priorities, constraints, and opportunities.

The right approach might be a relatively straightforward tenant improvement with healthier finishes. It might be a wellness space designed around natural materials, daylight, and occupant comfort. Or it might be a highly specialized architectural feature that gives a space its identity.

We start by understanding what you're trying to accomplish, who the space is for, and what matters most to the project.

From there, we can determine where healthier materials, natural building techniques, biophilic design, thoughtful lighting, and careful craftsmanship can contribute meaningfully—and where they simply aren't necessary.

The goal is to create a space that supports the business, serves the people who use it, and reflects the character of the place.
